CHAR DHAM OF MEWAR (RAJASTHAN)

Every Indian knows "Char Dham" means the names of four pilgrimage sites in India that are widely revered by Hindus. It comprises Badrinath, Dwarka, Puri and Rameswaram. It is considered highly sacred by Hindus to visit Char Dham during one's lifetime. The other pilgrimages sites in the Indian state of Uttarakhand viz. Yamunotri,Gangotri,Kedarnath & Badrinath were known as "Chota Char Dham" but very few people knows " Char Dham of MEWAR (RAJASTHAN)".

Char Dham of MEWAR are as follows:


1. Shrinathji Temple, Nathdwara (Rajasthan)  


This is the famous hindu temple devoted to Shrinathji and famous pilgrimage centre by Vaishnavs. Shrinathji symbolizes a form of Krishna, when he lifted the Govardhan hill, with one arm raised. Shrinathji Temple is also known as 'Haveli of Shrinathji’ (mansion).The temple was built by Goswami priests in 1672.

Nathdwara stands for "Nath" & "Dwar" which means the doors to Lord. This place is situated on right bank of "Banas river" very close to Udaipur (City of Lakes) in Rajasthan.

The story behind this temple is that the Lord Krishna himself has chosen this place for him. When the legends were shifting the the idol of the Lord Krishna from Vrindaban to some other safer place to protect it from destructive wrath of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. When idol reached this spot (presently Nathdwara), the wheels of bullock cart in which idol was travelling is, sank axle-deep in mud and could not be moved any further, at all. After seeing this the priests which accompanied,realised that the particular place was the Lord's chosen spot and accordingly, a temple was built there under the rule and protection of the then Maharana Raj Singh of Mewar.

The main attractions are the Aartis and the Shringar, i.e. the dressing and beautifying of the idol of Shrinathji which changed seven times daily thus got the names as follows:

2. Shri Eklingji Temple, Kailashpuri, Udaipur        

Eklingji temple is one of the famous temple of Rajasthan (part of char dham of Mewar). It is situated in the town of Eklingji (Kailashpuri) which is around 23 kms from Udaipur on the national highway no. 8. surrounded by dense forest of Aravali Mountains range. 

Eklingnath Temple is dedicated to the Lord Shiva of the Hindu religion. Initially, the temple was built in 734 A.D. by Bappa Rawal. 

The architecture of Eklingnath temple is magnificent. The double-storied temple looks awesome with its pyramidal style of roof and distinctly carved tower. The beautifully  temple complex includes 108 temples within its high walls. The main temple is a huge pillared hall or 'mandap' that is sheltered by hefty pyramidal roof with a four-faced image of Lord Shiva in black marble. Its height ranges around 50 feet and its four faces depict four forms of Lord Shiva. The east-facing part is recognized as Surya, the west-facing part is Lord Brahma, the north-facing part is Lord Vishnu and the south-facing part is Rudra i.e. Lord Shiva himself. The zenith of the multifaceted idol is known as 'Yantra that stands for the ultimate reality. The Shivlinga (Phallic form of Lord Shiva) garlanded by a silver snake, acquires the major attraction of people. 

About 1 km from Eklingji, Nagda town is famous for its "Sahasra Bahu Temples" and "Adbudji temples". The Sas-Bahu Temple is widely known for its exquisite stone carvings, which are related to incidents in the great Indian epic Ramayana.

3. Dwarkadhish Temple of Kankroli  (Rajasthan) 


Dwarkadhish Temple of Kankroli is one of the prominent tourist attractions of Nathdwara located in the Kankroli Village. This temple also famous as 'Kankroli Temple' which is sited on the banks of renowned Rajsamand Lake. Kankroli is a small town, located at a distance of 65 kms from the city of Udaipur. . Dwarikadhish is one of the names of Lord Krishna. This Temple is the most significant temple of the Vaishnavas and Vallabhacharya sect. The red stone idol of Kankroli temple is believed to have imported from Mathura, the hometown of Lord Krishna.

4. Charbhuja Ji Temple of Garhbor, Rajsamand (Rajasthan) 


Charbhuja Ji Temple is a famous temple of the lord Vishnu in the Garhbor village in the Kumbhalgarh tehsil of Rajsamand district. This village is situated in Aravalli Mountain ranges. It is 38 km from the district headquarters RajsamandGomati river flows nearby this temple.
The idol of Shri Charbhuja Ji is 85 centimeters high. The four arms of the idol hold conch, discus, mace and a lotus flowers. The discus and the mace symbolize dynamic power, energy and prowess. Some casts like Rajputs and the Gurjars hold a special reverence for this temple. Rajputs attribute a sword and shield as symbol of Rajput chivalry in every darshan.
The temple is made by mirrors, Lime mortars and Marble. The excellent work of the mirror is done in the original temple. The shutters of the inner temple are made of gold while outer shutters are made of silver. Garud ji is installed in the other courtyard. Stone elephants are placed on the both sides of the entrance. Temple is in the open space. The temple is visited by thousands of pilgrims.
